April is Alcohol Awareness Month: Balance & Safety

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, which offers a chance to step back and think about how alcohol fits into our daily lives. Rather than focusing on restriction, this month is about awareness, safety, and making choices that support your overall wellbeing.

April is also a time to bring awareness to alcohol misuse and abuse. Whether you’re reflecting on your own habits or supporting someone else, small moments of awareness can make a meaningful difference.

Understanding the Impact

Alcohol can affect more than just how we feel in the moment. It can impact sleep quality, hydration, concentration, and recovery time—things that play an important role in both personal health and workplace safety.

Even small adjustments, like spacing drinks out or being more intentional about when you choose to drink, can have a positive effect.

This topic may not apply to everyone personally, but it may be relevant to someone in your life—whether that’s a family member, friend, or coworker. Having awareness and understanding can help support not only your own health, but also the wellbeing of those around you.

A “Pause and Plan” Mindset

One approach that many people find helpful is a “pause and plan” mindset.

Before reaching for a drink, take a moment to consider your schedule, responsibilities, and how you want to feel the next day. Planning ahead, especially for social events, can help you stay in control of your choices.

Practical Tips to Keep in Mind

A few practical tips to keep in mind this month:

  • Set a personal limit before social situations

  • Alternate alcoholic drinks with water or non-alcoholic options

  • Avoid using alcohol as your primary way to manage stress

  • Be mindful of how alcohol may interact with medications or health conditions

  • Always plan for safe transportation

If you or someone you know is thinking about making a change to drinking habits, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) recommends:

  • Keep track of the drinks you consume

  • Know the standard drink sizes so you can count and measure accurately

  • Set goals for how many days per week you will drink and how many drinks you will have per day

  • Find enjoyable alternatives to drinking

  • Avoid triggers, such as certain people or places

  • Develop strategies for handling urges

  • Plan how you will say “No thanks” when you don’t want a drink
